Saša Stanišić was born in Višegrad in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1978 and has been living in Germany since 1992. His first novel, Wie der Soldat das Grammofon repariert, 2006 (How the Soldier Repairs the Gramophone, 2008) was translated into thirty-one languages. For his novel Vor dem Fest, 2014 (Before the Feast, 2015), he was awarded several prizes, including the Alfred Döblin Prize and the Leipzig Book Fair Prize. Saša Stanišić lives and works in Hamburg.
